The Achuar nation is an ancient rainforest civilization located in the south east of the Ecuadorian Amazon Basin. Their territory has 5000 square kilometers of the world’s most pristine, well preserved and pollution free rainforest on the planet. Being the Achuar very proud warriors they wanted to preserve their way of living and their cosmo-vision free of foreign input and therefore the only practical solution to allow the world to see this magnificence was sustainable tourism which could be a benefit to their well being without altering their ways.
So back in 1993, after a large effort conducted by individuals fully committed to the environment, several agreements were signed between the Achuar community and the late Carlos Perez Perasso, who by all means was a philanthropist, a gentleman and a man of honour, in order to create the Kapawi Lodge. In January 2008 this agreement came to an end and the lodge was handed over to the owners, the Achuar Nation. They have created a board of directors, hired a professional administrative party and decided to be part of Exclusive Hotels and Haciendas of Ecuador since our criteria of sustainability matches perfectly well with their own way of living.
